Released 11/12/2024
Canberrans are invited to welcome 2025 on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin with a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration. There will be two fireworks displays, one at the family friendly time of 9.00pm and to celebrate as the clock strikes midnight.
Fireworks will launch from the Central Basin and Commonwealth Bridge, ensuring maximum visibility across four celebration hubs at Rond Terrace, Queen Elizabeth Terrace and two hubs at Regatta Point, with one closest to Commonwealth Ave and Nerang Pool. Each hub will feature local DJs, food and beverages and amenities.
The sky will light up with colour from vantage points across the city including Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve, Red Hill Nature Reserve, and the surrounding suburbs of Barton, Campbell, Civic, Kingston, Reid, Russell and Yarralumla.
Canberra’s Mix 106.3 will broadcast the firework soundtrack live this year at both 9pm and midnight. Canberrans can tune in to experience the fireworks in sync with the music, whether you're at one of the lakeside hubs or enjoying the view elsewhere.
This is a free event for the community, festivities begin from 6pm. Bring a picnic or support the great local food and drink vendors onsite and enjoy the views of our beautiful city to bring in the new year.
Extended trading under special event legislation
You can head into the city after the 9.00pm fireworks display to keep the party going at Canberra’s wonderful restaurants and entertainment venues.
New Year’s Eve 2024 has been declared a special event under the Liquor Act 2010, allowing Canberra businesses to ring in 2025 with extended trading hours.
Venues will be able to automatically extend their trading hours and supply liquor in open containers at the premises past their usual licensing times. They must adhere to any other conditions on the licence during the extended period and have an obligation under the Act to serve alcohol responsibly.
Public Transport
Free public transport is available for Canberrans attending New Year’s Eve celebrations from the evening until the last service. The summer holiday public transport timetable will be released soon and provides more set detail.
Attendees are encouraged to pre-plan their evening, park safely and legally if driving, and embrace this opportunity to come together and celebrate responsibly.
