From 27 August 2024, drivers detected committing road offences by the road safety camera network will have their vehicle details checked to make sure their registration is up to date.
To improve road safety outcomes in our community, the ACT Government is introducing a new process to detect unregistered vehicles being driven on our road network. When a vehicle is detected and issued an infringement, as part of the adjudication process, the vehicle’s registration will also be checked.
Vehicle registration is a legal requirement and crucial for maintaining road safety.
Executive Branch Manager of Access Canberra, Louise Bassett says there are no new offences being introduced, only a new process for detection.
“The ACT Government is committed to keeping our roads safe for all Canberrans. Vehicle registration is a crucial part of that,” Louise Bassett said.
“If your vehicle is unregistered, it's also uninsured. This means that in the event of an accident you are not covered in the case of injury or death to other road users - whether that’s other drivers or pedestrians. Insurance covers your liability, and the liability of anyone else driving your vehicle.
“You can register your vehicle quickly and easily by visiting the Access Canberra website www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au.”
The key focus of infringements in the first few months will be for driving unregistered, with additional infringements for also driving uninsured to then be implemented.
“We hope the staged approach for implementing the infringements will help ease the significant financial impact for anyone detected driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle through the new registration detection process, particularly with current cost of living pressures.”
