Gungahlin Cemetery now home to new area for memorial options - unique to Canberra

Released 20/01/2025

A new peaceful and tranquil area has today been officially opened at Gungahlin Cemetery for families to consider as a final resting place for loved ones.

“Already the city’s largest cemetery with a broad range of burial options including natural burials and catering for various faiths, Gungahlin Cemetery is now home to a new 1.3 acre memorial garden,” Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne said.

“Sanctuary Creek offers the community new and innovative memorial options, designed specifically for the Canberra community, in a reflective space for family members to inter their loved ones.

“The $1.8 million boutique memorial space hosts water features and a covered rotunda area that can be used to hold small memorial services. To help make the process a little smoother, power supply is also provided at the rotunda to assist families who may wish to use devices or equipment during services.

“Users of Sanctuary Creek will find the area has various Canberra specific artwork as well as flora and fauna. Contours of Mount Ainslie have been used on a wall with nearby round interment spaces representing the many walking trails on the mountain. The gang-gang cockatoo, bluebell flower and Black Mountain are also featured in the area.

“The new memorial garden features a delightful blend of native and introduced plants, specifically selected for Canberra’s climate,” Minister Cheyne said

“Families can choose from a variety of boutique interment options at Sanctuary Creek for their loved ones, providing a unique experience and one not available anywhere else in Australia. I would like to congratulate the team and the Board at Canberra Memorial Parks who worked closely with architects, designers and contractors on this wonderful addition to Gungahlin Cemetery,” Minister Cheyne concluded.
